Forklift rental

Forklifts split three ways in the rental market, and the split is about the ground rather than the load. Cushion-tire trucks are for finished floors and are useless outside. Pneumatic-tire trucks handle a yard or a compacted lot. Rough terrain trucks are purpose-built for unimproved ground and cost roughly a third more to hire.

How to choose the right forklift

Cushion or pneumatic, not both

Cushion tires are solid rubber on a small wheel: they turn tightly, sit low and are the right answer inside a warehouse. Put one on gravel and it will not move. Pneumatic tires carry the same capacity outdoors on a compacted surface. If any part of the job is outside, book pneumatic.

Capacity is quoted at a load centre

A 5,000 lb rating is 5,000 lb at a 24 inch load centre. Move the weight further out on the forks and the safe capacity falls fast. Long or awkward loads need more truck than the raw weight suggests.

Check the lowered mast height against the door

The mast, not the overhead guard, is usually the tallest part of a cushion truck, and a two-stage mast lowers to roughly 83 inches. Measure the opening before the machine is on a trailer.

Training and compliance

Before the machine arrives. OSHA requires forklift operators to be trained, evaluated and re-evaluated at least every three years, and the evaluation is the employer's responsibility rather than the rental company's. A rental agreement does not transfer it.

Frequently asked questions

What does forklift rental cost in Texas?

A 5,000 lb cushion runs $250–$363 a day, $625–$1,000 a week and $1,250–$2,625 for four weeks. Larger sizes scale from there, and the full table is on this page. Dallas runs about 15% above the Texas average, and San Antonio and Fort Worth about 20% above.

Is it cheaper to rent by the week?

Substantially. Across Texas listings a week costs about two and a half day rates and four weeks about five, so the effective cost per day roughly halves on a weekly hire. If the job is five days or more, ask for the weekly rate rather than five daily ones, and most suppliers will apply it automatically, but not all of them.

What does the rate not include?

Delivery and collection, fuel, the transport surcharge most suppliers index to the diesel price, the rental protection plan at around 15% unless you supply a compliant certificate of insurance, and tax. Our estimator adds delivery, protection and tax so you can see the real number rather than the headline one.

How is forklift rental taxed in Texas?

Texas charges 8.25% sales tax on bare rental in every city we cover. Sales tax only. The TERP surcharge applies to off-road diesel equipment, so it does not apply to this machine.

Do I need a certified operator?

OSHA requires forklift operators to be trained, evaluated and re-evaluated at least every three years, and the evaluation is the employer's responsibility rather than the rental company's. A rental agreement does not transfer it.
