Why the price is not the same across Texas
Rental rates track how long machines stay out, not how far they travelled. In a metro where the dominant work is tilt-wall industrial or data centre construction, a telehandler goes out for three months and comes back needing a service, so the yard prices for that. In a metro where the work is fit-out and maintenance, the same machine turns over weekly and the rate is softer.
That is why Dallas and Fort Worth, twenty minutes apart and sharing a rental market, do not price the same. It is also why we adjust rates for the five largest metros and refuse to for the rest: below that, the data thins out to the point where any local figure we published would be noise dressed up as insight.
The other thing that moves the number is haul distance. Delivery is usually the largest single variable on a short hire, and it is why every quote request asks for the site address rather than the city.

Why do rates differ between Texas cities?
- Supply and the length of the average hire, mostly. Dallas runs about 15% above the Texas average because tilt-wall and data centre work keeps machines out for months. San Antonio and Fort Worth run about 20% above. Houston and Austin sit at the average. Texas as a whole is not a discount market. It prices at or above the national average, which surprises people who expect it to be cheaper than California.
Why is there no local rate for smaller cities?
- Because the sampling is too thin to mean anything. In the smaller metros a handful of listings in a given week can make one suburb look 40% more expensive than the city next to it, and publishing that as a local rate would be inventing a market that does not exist. Those cities quote the statewide band, adjusted for haul distance from the nearest yards.
